US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this ongoing 3-day a week class, emerging readers* will work toward the ultimate goal of becoming an independent reader while also making friends in a cheerful classroom environment. Incoming students should already be able to recognize the letters of the alphabet and be familiar with all of their phonetic sounds at a minimum. However, the students are not expected to be able to read very many, if any, words in the beginning. Each class will continue to reinforce the phonetic sounds of the...
* Sight words - This is the main focus of the class. Sight words are the best way for the student to build a working vocabulary to jump start their reading. * Phonics * Writing alphabet letters * CVC Word families (ran, tan, man, can...etc.) * Reading simple beginner sentences and stories relying heavily on sight words. * Socialization and description skills through the end of class free-talk session.
* A weekly at-home packet will also be provided every week so that students can practice what they will be learning in the classroom each week. The packet is sent out on the classroom page at 6:00 am Pacific Time every Sunday. The after-class work is provided as an enhancement to the class, not as a homework requirement. I will leave it up to each parent's discretion if they feel their students will benefit from the after-class activities. My two top priorities are that students learn their TOP 18 words and that they are able to recognize and read the 6 sight words by the end of the week. For many children this will require some extra practice outside of the classroom. Sight words, by their nature, cannot be sounded out and must, therefore, be memorized by sight. Learning sight words is the fastest way to build students' reading vocabulary. If you can only manage one thing from the packet please focus on the sight words.
3 files available upon enrollmentLearners should come to class with the weekly sight words sheet or elementary-sized lined paper with a dark pencil, marker, or crayon. Students may also use a dry-erase board if they prefer.
Learners will be assessed throughout the classes. The teacher will email individualized feedback to students as needed.
2 hours per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Not required but a set of Dolch or Fry sight words would be handy to help your student learn the 220 most common sight words. This class will focus on level 1 and 2 cards from this set that can be purchased, if you choose, on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07S9R7K89/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Please print the Top 18 flashcards that is attached to your welcome letter. These 18 words are the most commonly used words in the English language. Practicing with these flashcards at home will really jumpstart your learners reading.
