US Grade Kindergarten - 2
*Although this ongoing class, students are welcome to join or leave on any given week. The classes will repeat after the 12th class.* In this course, students will be engaged for 30 minutes each week on how to read words with 2 and 3 letter blends and diagraphs. A consonant blend is when two or more consonants are blended together, but each sound may be heard in the blend. The most common beginning consonant blends include: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fr, tr, fl, gl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm, sp, and st. Blends can also occur at the end of words as in the word “last”. There are also blends that contain three consonants. Common three consonant blends include str, spl, and spr. In a consonant digraph, two consonants stand together to represent a single sound. The most common consonant digraphs are: sh, ch, th, and wh. Students should have an understanding of letters and their corresponding sounds before taking these classes. The class will focus on a different blend or diagraph each week. . Students will practice the sound of the blend or diagraph being introduced. Next, students will think of different words using those blends. As we are creating, students are encouraged to write new words. They will also practice by playing interactive games and reading a book with some of their new words. Week of Jan 1 - L Blends. Such as bl, pl, cl, etc. Week of Jan 8: R Blends.
