** Level 3 Class Explanation **
Children naturally thrive on discovering patterns, and harnessing this instinct is key to helping them learn to read and spell. Level 3 focuses on leveraging word families to empower students in their reading journey. Word families, also known as phonograms, consist of words sharing a predictable pattern, typically rhyming and ending similarly. For example, the CVC word family ‘-at’ includes words like cat, bat, hat, rat, sat, and mat.

This approach is particularly beneficial for emergent readers as it boosts confidence by providing decoding and spelling strategies. The aim is for students to read and spell a group of words independently each week, fostering a sense of accomplishment and confidence. This newfound confidence translates into their ability to recognize and sound out words in the books they encounter independently.

The class structure begins with a welcoming "hello" song, followed by the introduction of the Word Family for the week. The session involves reviewing words, playing Eye-Spy (with a spelling twist), engaging in a scavenger hunt, and reading a book all centered around the designated Word Family. The class concludes with a farewell, waving, and a Good-Bye song.

To enhance the learning experience at home, I will provide learning sheets corresponding to the weekly Word Family. Word families serve as a foundation for tackling more complex words in reading and writing. In the often perplexing landscape of English language patterns and rules, word families offer a consistent and approachable structure.

Importantly, there is no specific order for learning word families in this ongoing class, providing flexibility for students to join at any time and participate for as long as needed. The schedule below will be regularly updated as required.
