Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this Learn to Read with UFLI Level 1 class, your child will first be assessed to determine a starting level of instruction. I will conduct a phonics assessment during a 1:1 live class meeting where I can get to know your child and determine a starting level of instruction.

I recommend two sessions per week to see the best results for progression.

Once a starting level is determined, students will begin lessons at that level. The scope and sequence of this Level 1 class begins with basic letters and sounds, short vowels, CVC words, digraphs, VCe words and reading longer words with endings such as -es, -ed, -ing, and words with open and closed syllables.

The curriculum for this Learn to Read with UFLI Level 1 class will include the activities listed below. This class will include lots of interaction with the teacher, power point slides, games and some brain breaks! I will post a "homework" sheet that you can do with your child to reinforce skills that we have learned each lesson.

*Say it and Move It-using Elkonin boxes to say the sounds in CVC words and move the chips into boxes as we say the sounds
*Visual Drill- identify the letter name and say the sound of the letter
*Auditory Drill-teacher says a sound and student writes letter on dry erase board with a focus on letter formation
*Blending Drill-students will say sounds of letters and blend them to say/read the word
*Word Sort-students will sort words based on letter sounds or patterns
*Irregular Words-students will learn special rules for spelling words that are irregular (heart words) and do not follow traditional phonics rules
*Connect with Text-students will read words, sentences and eventually passages and books, answer comprehension questions and have discussions about the text.

My teaching style will incorporate the following method of student engagement:
"I Do"- teacher models lesson (students will watch teacher present lesson)
"We Do" -guided practice (students will do lesson together with teacher)
"You Do"- independent practice (students try the lesson on their own)

I am Orton Gillingham certified teacher and will follow the OG approach while teaching this class including the following criteria.

*Assessment: students will be assessed to determine a starting level of instruction.

*Systematic and Sequential: the content will follow a highly researched scope and sequence plan that includes constant review of previously taught skills.

*Explicit Instruction: direct instructions with a high level of teacher/student interaction.

*Multi-Sensory: students will learn by using their senses including touch and movement. This will include activities such as sky writing, tracing, use of Play-doh and Pop-Its to say/push sounds, Slinkys to segment and blend words, white boards and dry erase markers, and even our own bodies to tap out sounds that we hear/say in words.

*Diagnostic and Prescriptive: students will be progress monitored on a regular basis to ensure mastery of skills and determine a plan for future instruction.

I am reading teacher with 15 years of experience in the classroom as well as over 10 years of tutoring struggling readers. I have a passion for teaching reading and helping students become strong, confident readers and I know I can help your child learn to read!

I look forward to meeting your child and beginning the fun and exciting journey of learning to read! 😊

Learning Goals

Students will learn basic phonemic awareness skills such as identifying and manipulating the sounds in words and progress to developing phonics skills by making connections of the sounds to letters in words. They will use these skills to develop blending and decoding skills that lead them to be a fluent reader that is proficient in reading grade appropriate material with a mastery of understanding what they read (comprehension) which is the ultimate goal of learning to read.
