PRE-REQUISITE: Learners must take Learn to Read - Level 2 first and have Teach Calliope's approval prior to enrolling in this class.
============================================
In this ongoing 3 day a week class, students reading at 2nd and 3rd-grade levels will work toward the ultimate goal of becoming proficient readers who can comprehend, analyze and discuss what they have read. Incoming students should be able to read at a beginning 2nd-grade level at the least. They also should be able to write simple sentences to answer questions and express their ideas. Students should be comfortable reading most of the following paragraph:

When Jack and Annie reached the bottom of the hill,
they knelt behind a bush. Annie started to speak,
but Jack quickly put his finger to his lips.
Then he and Annie peeked out at the Triceratops.
(excerpt from Magic Treehouse book #1)

**If your student is not yet ready to read this paragraph please consider enrolling your student in one of my other classes:

Every student will have an opportunity to read from the books we are using each week in class. In addition, each class will focus on vocabulary building. We will also enhance our reading by researching the subject matter of the book to help students learn what is fictional and non-fictional in our readings.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their spelling and vocabulary each week. Students will also improve their reading fluency skills so that they are reading at an appropriate speed with good pronunciation and proper intonation. Students will learn to write sentences/paragraphs to show their comprehension and analyze what they have read. Additionally, students will use their writing and oral skills to discuss their opinions and extended knowledge of the subject matter.

Hello! My name is Calliope, and I live in sunny, Southern California with my husband, son, daughter and the amazing Kasey Doodle dog. I have 18 years of teaching experience in private schools, homeschooling my two children and teaching English to children in China, Japan and Mongolia. I also have a Bachelor’s degree from U.C.L.A. in History and Education.

I would love to teach your child about all the “ins-and-outs” of the English language and reading skills.

I believe in encouraging as much student output as possible during our classes. Children will learn best when they feel involved and every child in my classroom is important and greatly valued. I want children to see that what they are learning is relevant to their lives and taught in a genuine and caring manner.

I promise any student of mine will leave my class with a smile on their face and excitement about the content they just learned. I can’t wait to see you in the classroom!
