Class Experience

In this ongoing class, students will learn how to decode, sound out, and blend words. This is an important and challenging foundational skill for beginner readers. They will learn how to sound out and blend consonants, vowels, CVC, CVCe, digraphs, word families, and more. We will also work on initial, ending, and middle sounds (which they do test on in school). Please also note, that blending and hearing middle and ending sounds can be difficult. It may take a couple of lessons to grasp (and that is why we will work on the same sound twice a week). Working with your child a little each night will help tremendously!

The lessons are taught through Google Slides and will be provided with printable worksheets and books for the lessons. There will involve some cutting, gluing, sorting, and coloring activities. We will spend two days on each lesson.

Also, because being able to hear the proper pronunciation and blending of the letters/words is critical, students will be muted after the greeting (depending on the amount of students enrolled). When students first enter into the class, we can all say hi and together, but when we start, I will mute everybody. When I call a specific person to help out, they will be able to unmute themselves (so please make sure they know how to do unmute themselves). Even though students will be muted, it's important that they still follow with me out loud at home.

Foundational skills are critical to set the stage for future success in reading, and that is why I offer a sight words class! With over 8 years of teaching experience in elementary education, teaching in public schools, I have found that when students know these sight words, it dramatically increases their confidence and comprehension.
