Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In these one on one reading sessions, I will teach students how to read from the very beginning.

Each lesson will be 30 minutes long. It will start with a quick check-in. Then, I will teach the lesson, your student will practice the skill, and we will end with a fun game.

Lessons will be taught in the following scope and sequence. There are 5 similar lessons for each sound or blend to be taught on different days. Repetition through various activities is key.

If I believe that your child has mastered the sound or blend in less than 5 lessons, I will have them move on to the next sound. If they need more time with a sound, I will repeat sounds as needed! Because this is an ongoing class, I keep notes to track what sound they stopped at. That way you can come and go in the subscription as you please.

My goal is to build their confidence so they learn to love reading. You will often find us saying positive affirmations to remind them they CAN do hard things.

Here are some of the activities that will be in the lessons.
Saying phonemes aloud
Slowly pushing sounds together
Reading decodable sentences
Tapping or segmenting words
Clapping Syllables
Spelling words
Rhyming words
Onset and Rime (the string of letters that follow the onset)

[Onsets and rimes are phonological units of a spoken syllable, typically split in two – the onset and the rime. Onset is the initial phonological part of any word, consisting of the initial consonant or consonant blend. Rime is the string of letters that follow the onset, consisting of a vowel and any final consonants.]

How will you teach?
-I will provide explicit teaching with a lot of repetition to reinforce concepts. I will break down concepts into bite-size pieces. I will teach with interactive slides and games. The slides will allow them to vocalize sounds, write or type on the screen/paper, or drag and drop to categorize things.

Learning to decode words and common irregular words through a phonetic approach is more effective than rote memorization. Meaning I won’t drill and kill sight words or have them fall back on guesses. They will gain the ability to decode words by learning sounds and blends.

What's your teaching style?
-My teaching style is all about allowing learners to feel heard and to learn as much as they can in our session. I will start with a check-in and end with a game.

Please note that I am a special education teacher who welcomes older learners needing a refresher in certain reading skills. I like to have fun and laugh while we are learning. I enjoy building confidence and giving a lot of praise. Let me know if you have a significantly young learner who is ready to start reading. All are welcome!

Can I request that my child start lessons farther along the scope and sequence?

Yes! Please keep in mind that it is sometimes assumed a child has mastered a sound like ‘a‘ if they can say the sound by itself and read common words like ’cat ‘. But if you give them ‘wag’ or ‘gap’, they struggle. If you request for them to start further along, I will take one session to do a brief check to ensure the starting point is appropriate.

If there is a time not listed, feel free to message me about availability. This is an ongoing class that you can unsubscribe from at any time!

Parental Guidance
Occasionally students will be asked to join my Nearpod class. An account is not required! Instead, I will provide a link in the Zoom chat. After they click on the link, they will type their first name and be able to join the lesson! You are also able to download the Nearpod app. The student will put in the code provided in the chat. Nearpod will have the slides I will teach from and it will become an interactive platform for your child to participate. It's helpful to have two screens up on your laptop/computer. One for our Zoom class and one with Nearpod. In addition, we will also use games I created on Bamboozle.com to help make learning fun. We will play games similar to Jeopardy, Tic-tac-toe, Snakes n’ Ladders, Football, Soccer, Memory, or Connect 4. All content will be school-appropriate. The games on Bamboozle.com will not need an account and will be shared on my screen only. I will control the game and the content will be based on the sounds, blends, or decodable sentences we learned in class that week. Because I have created all of the content, it is assured that it follows Outschool's class content policies.
