Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
As an experienced reading teacher, I know how important it is to keep the learning fun! Reading while opening The Magic Closet for a STEM lesson always keeps things interesting! This fun and skill-building, ongoing class will provide the phonetic mechanics required for your child to decode and read with confidence. Let's practice vowel-blends, long and short vowel sounds, read simple words (CVC, CVVC, CVCV), practice digraphs (two consonants like tr, sh and ch) and diphthongs (vowel sounds like Y as I or OY, OW), and enjoy word formation as we delve into the Magic Closet. This is an excellent class for the learner who is just beginning to read, or for those struggling with proficiency. Every child has an opportunity to read aloud during every single class!

Each class will stand alone as we focus on individual letter sounds, match them with vowels, and create new words. We will practice writing and be introduced to sight words. Our read-aloud stories will reinforce the vowel and consonant combinations of the day.

Because of our vowel blend approach, some days may have two focus letters (as in the case of "C" and "K" - ca, ke, ki, co, cu). If a particular vowel is the focus of the day, we will learn the long and short sounds of the vowel. We will learn why vowels sometimes say their long sounds and how to tell the difference. Learning about silent vowels comes into play with these lessons.

To keep things exciting, we will also visit the Magic Closet to enjoy a daily STEM lesson and discover a "mystery object" to engage our thinking skills!

Hello and welcome!
My name is Tina Cowell and I'm an experienced teacher and principal with 20 years in the classroom. I enjoy teaching students of all ages: preschoolers, kindergarten students who are just learning to reading, as well as graduating high school seniors. I have six years of online teaching experience, particularly with preschool and kindergarten-age children, and know how to keep students engaged throughout a virtual class. As a career teacher and elementary school administrator, I believe all students can be engaged and inspired by an open and relaxed approach to reading. My classes are built around student engagement, interaction and comfort, and encourage a love of reading and discovery. We always have a lot of fun! I have experience with learners on the spectrum, as well as those in gifted programs. I am accustomed to and welcome those who are learning English as a second or third language. I am also sensitive to those who are adjusting to the virtual classroom and just wish to listen. Please reach out to me with any questions you may have. I hope you'll join me for every exciting class!
