US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
In this class, students will increase their knowledge and automaticity of uppercase and lowercase letters. Using the researched strategies from the Science of Reading that explicitly and systematically teaching phonics and phonemic awareness students will practice reading from the beginning level, which is spoken language. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, think about, and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. We will do this by segmenting, blending, and rhyming spoken words. Ex: /c/ /a/ /t/= cat. MOP is broken into the sounds /m/ /o/ /p/. TOP rhymes with MOP. This is the FIRST and very important step to reading. We will learn reading structure (top to bottom, left to right) and sound blending to read and write 2-3 letter words. I teach using Google Slides, flashcards, a whiteboard, and YouTube songs that I have been given permission to use. (I will be screen sharing the videos.) Students are welcomed and encouraged to work along with me in a notebook or on a marker board. Students can be prepared to answer questions or read by themselves, in partners, or in trios. Continual scaffolding and modifications will be available to meet the learners where they are. Students should be ready to start learning letter sounds, or already in the process. This class is not for advanced learners. If your student is already reading CVC words and beyond with good fluency, this class may not challenge them as needed. Our class structure will be as follows: -Greeting -1 (seldom 2) letter or word songs -Letter/sound identification practice -Phonemic awareness practice -Word blending -Goodbye Students may join anytime. Our class structure will be the same each week. I do not structure my classes by teaching a certain word family or set of letters with each class. We will continually practice all letters and sounds throughout this class. Our class schedule: 1. Week of June 26 Letter identification, phonemic awareness, and CVC blending 2. Week of July 3 Letter identification, phonemic awareness, and CVC blending 3. Week of July 10 Letter identification, phonemic awareness, and CVC blending 4. Week of July 17 Letter identification, phonemic awareness, and CVC blending Continued…
Learning Goals
Students will improve in letter and sound identification, phonemic awareness, and reading and writing short vowel words.
