US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
In this ongoing weekly class, truck-loving friends will learn a new word family each week. We will listen to, and blend the letter sounds in the words. We will also learn to identify word patterns (word families) and use those word patterns to help them read new words. This class will nurture and develop the foundational reading skills students need to decode simple words and learn early sight words. This class is for learners who have a good understanding on their letter sounds, and is a great follow up class for students who have completed the Construction Truck Alphabet Club Class. Every week we will explore a new word family and create simple words with the same pattern. We will also spend time talking about construction and truck words which also have the same pattern; such as dig, tap and (hard) hat. We will dive into the world of word families, explore the letter sounds and blend and construct the words together! We will look carefully at a word, break down the letter sounds (segment), and construct simple words with the letter sounds that we know. This class is a place for learners to explore new words and feel success as they build their reading skills. Every week we will receive a mini book with the word family to read with our families after class. Bring your construction trucks, hard hats, and tools to class, and let's learn how to construct new words together! I will also support the students as they use their important social and communication skills as they share their thoughts about the vehicles and practice their letter sounds throughout the lesson. Students will be encouraged and supported as they participate in class. If you feel that your child may be shy or anxious about participating in class please feel free to contact me in advance and let me know. ********************************************************************************* The class schedule is as follows: --------🚛 OCTOBER 🚛-------- Week 09/30: word family -at Week 10/07: word family -ig Week 10/14: word family -op Week 10/21: word family -ad Week 10/28: word family -ip --------🚛 NOVEMBER 🚛-------- Week 11/04: word family -ob Week 11/11: word family -ip Week 11/18: No class this week (Thanksgiving break) Week 11/25: word family -ed --------🚛 DECEMBER 🚛-------- Week 12/04: word family -in Week 12/11: word family -an Week 12/18: word family -ug This is an ongoing class and students are welcome to join and leave the class at any time.

Sounding Out Words: 🧱
First we begin by learning to sound out words. We learn how to break down words into individual letter sounds. This is much like preparing our building blocks before we build.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Open University
Hello! My name is Roisin. Welcome to my classroom!
I have a both a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Education. For more than 20 years I have been a teacher and an educator. I have been a classroom teacher, a curriculum designer, a teacher trainer and an online English teacher. I have experience teaching students from PreSchool through to 9th grade, both in a regular classroom and also in a virtual classroom. For me as an educator, it has been rewarding at every level to nurture and foster early skills and equip young learners with the tools they need to inquire and question about the world around them. I love to see how these skills grow and develop, and support learners as they progress throughout the grades.
I believe that children learn when they are actively engaged in their learning, sharing their ideas and collaborating with their peers. Learning is inspired by lessons that are meaningful and relevant to students. The lessons spark their interest, nurture and develop an understanding of a 'big idea' and build essential skills. And of course fun and enjoyment in the classroom are essential ingredients too. When students are happy and engaged, those meaningful conversations and interactions happen naturally in the classroom.
Over the past few years I have learned to surf (badly). I am by no means a good surfer (in fact I'm pretty poor), but there is nothing more rewarding than finally standing upright on that board! Its good to feel the challenge of slowly mastering the various steps, before finally mastering the 'pop-up'. And nothing more humbling than seeing the little kids whizz past you as you struggle to master those skills during the process!
