Let's get ready to read. Come have fun learning all of the letter names and basic sounds of the alphabet. This 9 week course will meet three times per week and is meant for very beginners. It is designed for students who know little to no letters or letter sounds. There will be lots of repetition to practice the letters and sounds throughout the course. Presentation slides will be used to present the material. Homework will be assigned to reinforce concepts practiced in class. Young students learn best when they are exposed to familiar concepts repeatedly. I taught these same skills in my kindergarten classroom! Phonemic awareness skills are an essential component to reading. This course will teach beginning sounds, medial sounds, and ending sounds, how to count syllables, onsets and rimes, rhyming, the difference between vowels and consonants, how to write letters, and begin teaching students how to blend sounds to read consonant-vowel-consonant words such as (cat, cab, bat, pen). Sight words are not the focus of this course; however, by the end of the course we will practice very simple sentences using the sentence frame "I see a..." We will use singing, body movements, games, play-doh, writing, and show and tell to deeper our understanding of the alphabet. Alphabet stories may be used at the end of class if time permits. We will focus on the short vowel sounds and the most common sounds that the consonants make. Lots of extra knowledge is packed in although it's not the focus of the course. For example, students will learn the names of coins (dime for d, penny for p, ect), review shapes, some numbers, and colors! The course syllabus is below. **Depending on noise level, students may need a parent in close proximity but off camera to help mute and unmute and assist students with learning how to write on the screen.
