Description

Class Experience

In this six-week class, we will cover the following topics within the area of learning to read music:

Week 1: Learn about the 5-line staff and the treble clef lines and spaces
Week 2: Learn the bass clef lines and spaces and accidentals (flats and sharps) with brief look at key signatures
Week 3: Learn the different note and rest values (whole, half, quarter, eighth with brief overview of additional note values)
Week 4: Learn about ties, dotted notes, and dynamics
Week 5: Learn about tempo markings, time signatures and measures
Week 6: Learn various rhythm combinations in common time signatures and review everything

By the end of the week, the student should be able to identify all of the areas learned on a sheet of piano music (We will briefly meet key signatures, but will not learn them in this course.)
As a professional musician, and one who learned to read music at a very early age, I love seeing the light bulb go off over someone's head when they discover that all those black dots on a page mean something, and they can understand it themselves! Even if they can't actually play the notes on the page on the piano, just knowing that they can understand what all the symbols mean is an encouragement to many to pursue further knowledge of music. I hope to be a part of that inspiration to young learners.
Worksheets and online exercises (using musictheory.net) will be supplied at the end of each class to help the learner reinforce what they learned that week. The homework should not take more than about 45-60 minutes for the learner to complete each week.
 1 file available upon enrollment
No supplies needed. Learners should either have access to a printer to print the worksheet or the ability to complete it digitally (on a tablet, for example) and pencil or some other means of completing the worksheet each week and either be able to scan or photograph the completed worksheet if they want to upload it for me to see. But that is not absolutely necessary or required, because we will go over them each week together as a class. I also will provide a PDF of blank music staff paper that learners can print or use digitally during the classes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There is no formal assessment, but students can upload their worksheets and online exercise score reports to help me gauge their progress.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Exercises will be made available on musictheory.net for review and additional practice.
