What's included
80 live meetings
40 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be given access to books at their level to practice reading in between sessions. Students will also be asked to 'write' a story daily using appropriate writing techniques for the level. Students will be given accounts for some learning app games. Because the teacher provides the app access, there is no cost to the learner to access the games. This cost is part of the cost of the course. Students will be provided access codes from the teacher for the games.Assessment
Each week, the teacher makes notes of student strength and weakness in order to help create the next lesson. Assessments include kidwriting attempts, running records, and informal assessments of skills being rehearsed. Also, teacher can track student progress in the games assigned to them for use outside of class. In addition to the meetings, the teacher will set up 3 one on one sessions with students to complete more thorough assessments to gauge progress throughout the course. A parent conference will follow the assessment to discuss data and also discuss progress.Class Experience
US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
Beginner Level
The students will learn using a combination of videos, small group instruction, and teacher feedback. The students will learn the beginning basics to learning how to read. The students will also gain experience working with different text at their level so that the most growth can be obtained. Skills will be taught and reinforced using games, activities, videos, and short text passages based on the level of the students. The students will also incorporate a small writing activity. Students will focus on phonemic awareness, blending, encoding, decoding, and sharing with their peers. Our reading time will combine shared reading, choral reading, and independent reading. Our writing time will include modeled writing, invented spelling instruction, and learning fun tricks to remember unique spelling patterns. While spelling will not be a large part of instruction, there will be spelling instruction incorporated into the writing portion as we work through writing our stories together. The students will have an opportunity to share writing to their peers. The students should be familiar with letter identification and have a general knowledge of phonemic awareness skills such as rhyming, phoneme manipulation, and auditory discrimination. Homework will be assigned based on what the students need as determined during the classtime. Progress is evaluated using informal assessments and running records. Because this class runs based on student need, provide an exact syllabus of lessons is not possible until the teacher has completed the first set of assessments/conferences with families and is able to drive instruction based on the data gathered in student assessment.
Learning Goals
Students will focus on a phonics based format for learning how to read. The teacher will also include sight words using writing exercises and also in reading practice as well. Students will learn letter sounds, blending, early writing using invented spelling, sight words, and early reading comprehension.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parent participation outside of class will be required. Parents will need to listen to their child read, using the cues provided by the teacher when the child miscues. Parents will also be provided resources to help the students succeed.
Pre-Requisites
Students will need to be able to navigate normal Zoom room functions such as muting, unmuting, and annotating on the 'board'.
Supply List
Since the class is based on student need, the teacher will be in constant communication with the families. Teacher can provide resources for students to use outside of class. Books will be sent via the classroom for parents to print and read with students. We will use online games and activities for additional practice outside of class.
