Class Experience

Beyond the Norm Classes are available in Step up for Students EMA portal.

Bienvenue! Welcome to "Learn to Read French Immersion FLEX Class", a FLEX class for PreK-Elementary students!

This interactive journey into the French language is filled with fun and learning and GAMES!

Pleas note- this is an IMMERSION class. Your student will learn and make many connections but it will feel a bit like a struggle the first couple of weeks as they adapt. If your student feels overwhelmed, please reach out for additional supports.

This class will require effort but with that effort, there will be more gains.

The class would be a good fit for:

+ A young elementary student who is able to use a computer efficiently or has needed assistance- early elementary student being raised bilingual in French and English or is learning French already

+ A Gifted young learner needing extra enrichment (an immersion program in a foreign language is an excellent way to fill a learning need)

+ An older elementary student wanting to take on the challenge of learning French

This class uses a FULL immersion program for students to learn. As such, everything will be in French. I will speak in English and then start using a blend of English and French in communications and in the classroom but the immersion program itself will be in French. The games will also be translating English to French or French to English.

*****Upon starting the class, parents can request packets and intro lessons to help students ease into the immersion. The program uses certain phrases throughout such as "Listen and repeat". If the student struggles to pick up the words, please reach out.*****

The program employs a variety of online activities beyond the typical multiple-choice letter and word recognition. Techniques include listening to match sounds and using the microphone to practice their pronunciation with reading out loud.

Students will traverse different worlds, unlocking stories and earning badges with vocabulary-rich tales, centered around nature and animals, make learning engaging and enjoyable.

As students progress, the program adapts to the individual learner to offer targeted exercises and repeat things as necessary. Students also provide feedback on their difficulty level, helping to tailor their learning experience.

The content for each student will build from the alphabet in French to the sounds of the letters to word families. Lessons are ordered just as a French student in France learning to read.

Children can work on the lessons as fast or as slow as they desire. They will have unlimited access to the entire program in sequential order during the Flex class. When the 8 weeks are finished, if they wish to continue in the lessons from where they left off, they can sign up for a Part 2 class. Please notify me and all of their progress will be saved for continuation.

The lesson's go in this order (more than 1 lesson can be completed at a time if desired and students can test out of lessons in the beginning placement assessment if they have previous French background).

All content is mapped to national and state learning standards. Teaching is playful and supportive, using a blend of methods to cater to different learning styles. **Please be sure to let them complete pronunciation lessons in a quiet environment so their voice can be heard clearly by the analyzing program.

Each week, we will take a step back out of the immersion with 1-2x weekly videos learning beginning French and demonstrating different lessons based on the level children enrolled are placed during the first time assessment. Parents will receive updates on how their child is progressing in the program.

Each week, I will also post printables for hands-on, off screen practice and all French printable games to have fun practicing French.

Games used for review each week (multiple multiplayer games will be scheduled each week to support different timezones) include Snowbrawl, Tag, Farming, Don't Look Down, The Floor is Lava, Space Ship Escape Game. Students will also have individual games assigned to play on their own as they want to practice vocabulary- memory, fishing, battle ship, tug-a-war, and many more.

Join us for a fun-filled adventure into the French language!

Learning Goals

Being raised in New Orleans attending a French private school, we were taught French as a second language from Kindergarten to 8th grade. I continued my study of French in high school and then in college. I am now married to a man from Lyon, France and am teaching our son to speak and read both languages fluently.
