Each week, students will practice a new sound through a multi-sensory approach including phonemic awareness, manipulating letter tiles, reading words, and writing. See the description for the weekly target sound.
Class experience
Learning to read should be fun, engaging, and multi-sensory. This course is meant for early readers or struggling readers. For on grade-level first and second graders see Phonics and Spelling class. In this ongoing course, students will build a foundation for reading based on weekly targeted sounds. 1. Each class will begin with a review of the previously learned sounds and a discussion about the day’s target sound. 2. Students will then participate in a phonological awareness activity....
By the end of each class, students will be able to read and spell words with the targeted sound.
For several years, Miss Raz was a reading specialist at a Title 1 public school. As a Title 1 reading specialist, Miss Raz used Orton-Gillingham techniques to teach students who were reading below grade level. Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory, hands-on approach to teaching phonics.
