Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
In this class your learner will get phonics instruction and hands-on practice building CVC, CVCC, and sight words.

If you want to build a strong house, you start by building a strong foundation. This class will build your child's reading skills at the foundational level so that your child will be a strong, confident, independent reader. Reading is an essential skill. It is important learners are taught to read correctly. Reading can improve your child's communication skills and develop your child's self-confidence and independence.

Learning to hear is the first step in learning to read. In this class we will build words. We will focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, orthographic mapping and hands-on practice building and reading CVC, CVCC, and sight words. Learners will recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters. Learners will be given opportunities to decode and spell words, to sort words, to recognize misspellings, and to gain proficiency in using all this information. Learners will learn to focus their eyes and ears on the written code of the English language.

This class is designed for pre-readers who are familiar with letter recognition of both upper and lower case letters, as well as a familiarity with individual letter sounds. Mastery is not necessary, as we will review letters and their sounds as we work. At the start of class, we will do a short review on the individual letter sounds used in the lesson. All students will have many opportunities to participate. This class is for the beginning reader and the struggling reader.

If learning is power, then reading is your child's superpower!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome! I am Julie. I have 15 years of teaching experience. I taught in the elementary classroom for 8 years: 2 years in 5th grade and 6 years in Kindergarten (K-5). While living in Okinawa, Japan I taught ESL classes to children ages 5-12 years. I have taught ESL online for 5 years. I have mentored and privately tutored many elementary students throughout the years. I have lived and traveled all over the world and I have interacted with students from all different countries and cultures. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and an Elementary Education K-6 (all subject areas) certification. I am TEFL and TESOL certified.

I create a warm, engaging, organized and well-structured classroom where all learners are encouraged and involved.

I enjoy traveling and taking walks on the beach. I love all things health and fitness! I teach educational fitness classes, art classes, phonics classes and reading classes for young learners. I believe it is important to keep both our mind and body active. Reading is to the brain as exercise is to the body!

I look forward to seeing your learner in my classroom! 💛
