Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Phonics instruction is a critical component of literacy instruction for beginner ELLs who are learning or struggling to read in English. One of the most challenging tasks for literacy learners is decoding. Decoding is the ability to correctly decipher and identify a word from a string of letters. Students who struggle with decoding are at a disadvantage, but explicit instruction can help them learn this skill.

That's where I can help.

Learners enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to begin their reading journey by learning the letter sounds, reviewing blending 2 letter pairs (digraphs), reading three letter CVC words and finally progressing to reading full sentences on their own. Each class interaction will help them build their reading skills through the use of interactive games, videos, and pictures.

I teach using the phonetic method (learning to read by first learning letter sounds and not the letter name).

My classes are holistic in nature and communicative. I want all of my learners and their parents to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It's part of the journey and it's Okay!

Here is what we will learn and do with our 4 weeks together:

Week 1: Welcome/ Goals/ Introduction of letter sounds/ Letter sound game
Week 2: Review of letter sounds/ Letter sound picture game/ Digraphs
Week 3: Digraph review/ Introduction to three letter words (CVC words)
Week 4: Review of CVC words and letter sounds/ What's This? Game
Week 5: Introduction to simple sentences
Week 6: Reading practice with simple sentences
Week 7: Review of letter sounds/ Reading practice with simple sentences/ Read short story
Week 8: Reading
Parent(s)/guardian(s) will receive feedback on their learner's progress in the class.
Learning Goals
Learners will develop and strengthen their decoding skills to become better readers of English. Participants will have a greater understanding of the individual sounds within spoken words and how these sounds are manipulated to form words.

Master's Degree in Psychology from City University of New York (CUNY) - John Jay College
Greetings! I'm Courtney and so pleased to meet you! I have a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Seton Hall University, a Masters Degree from The City University of New York, and a TESOL from Arizona State University.

For the past 7 years, I have worked with a startup as a professional college essay writer and have taught writing and literacy skills in-person and online to both K-12 and adult learners. In these classes, I would engage all of my learners in topics that were of interest to them. This allowed for speedy growth and progress in every aspect of their literacy, speaking, and writing development.

My classes are writing, conversation and literacy-based. Expect a book club, a creative writing class, a social club, and fun trivia as a few of my course offerings.

In my classes, I take a communicative approach to learning. I strive to meet your student where they are in their learning journey and support them from there. Whether it is a 1-day class or a 5-week class, the attention I give to your learner (and you) is personalized.

Speaking of personal, I am a mother of a wonderful 8 year-old. His creative and imaginative personality helps fuel mine. Also, I am from New York City and elephants, lemurs, coffee, and cooking are some of my favorite things.

I appreciate you for your time and look forward to meeting you and your learner in my class!
