This class is perfect for students who have already taken my Learn to Read and Speak Japanese class, or students who have studied some Japanese grammar & vocabulary on their own! One of the most challenging and often discouraging parts of learning a new language is becoming comfortable with speaking that new language out in the wild. It can be difficult to find someone to practice on. When I was young and studying Japanese, I would very much want to practice speaking when I was in Japan or around Japanese-speaking acquaintances, but often feel too nervous to speak up. The goal of this conversation class is to give students a chance to become comfortable using Japanese words, sentences, and phrases in short conversations, and to ask questions and get real-time helpful feedback on their speaking in a relaxed environment. Each week we will have a different theme (for example, expressing what you like to do on the weekend, or what kinds of movies you like) for which I will provide PDF reference sheets with key vocabulary, phrases, and grammar written in ro-maji and hiragana/katakana/kanji. Because our group sizes are small (6 students maximum), each student will have lots of opportunities every class both to speak in Japanese and to practice their Japanese listening skills as their classmates speak :)
Learning Goals
Our ultimate goal each week is to have fun, acquire some new vocabulary, and gain familiarity with using and understanding conversational Japanese!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings!
My name is Lily. I have a Bachelor's Degree in East Asian Studies and an N1 certificate from the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). I have been teaching Japanese language and culture classes for all ages of children and adults since about 2011.
My teaching style is to use a varied range of sources and resources to give a solid academic foundation while also connecting with fun ways you can use foreign language skills in real life. I aim to spread the joy of learning another language and the wonderful insights we can all gain from learning about a foreign culture!
I am based on the East Coast of the USA but have a flexible teaching schedule, so if you see a class you are interested in but not a timeslot that works for you, feel free to contact me. I also schedule 1:1 individual classes which can be weekly or monthly to fit your needs and interests.
I love learning and I love teaching, and I am excited to share my classes with you!
I also enjoy reading novels of all kinds, writing stories, watching anime, and looking at pictures of cats.
Contact me if you have any questions!
