Learn to Read and Speak in Japanese! (ages 10-14)
Class experience
In our first week we will learn all about the history of the Japanese language and writing systems, how and why Katakana and Japan's other writing systems came to exist, and how they are used. We will also look at how a typical Katakana chart looks, and how to use it to read and write words! In week 2, we will learn the first 10 letters of the Katakana alphabet (the "a" row and the "ka" row), and practice reading and writing interesting words using those letters. We will also learn a little...
Learners will become familiar with and learn to read and write the 70 Katakana letters, as well as how to combine these letters to make additional sounds. In the course of doing so they will gain experience with recognizing letters in a variety of media and fonts, and gain skills in deciphering Japanese-ified English loan words (for example, スターウオーズ suta- uo-zu, "Star Wars"!). Learners will also take first steps into important introductory Japanese vocabulary words and phrases, and experience an overview of Japanese culture.
Homework Offered
Learners can expect to spend 1-2 hours on homework each week. Some assignments will be through the free app Lingo Deer, and some will be short PDF worksheets which I will send out between classes. Learners will send photos of their completed worksheets back to me so that I can check their work.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
