Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
In this self-paced course, students will learn how to play "The Star Spangled Banner" on piano. This class is best for late beginners or very early intermediate piano learners.

Each week, we take on a new section of the song. We will learn each part Hands Separately before putting them Hands Together. Students will be encouraged to practice the given sections on their own time between lessons.

Topics covered:
We will discuss the Time Signature and Key Signature of the music.
We will learn about song form.
We will learn how to do crossovers (a common piano technique) in the Right Hand.
We will cover dotted quarter-eighth rhythms and play them frequently in the song.
We'll discuss other musical elements as-needed, such as tempo markings, expressive elements, fermatas, repeats, etc.

I have a very positive, bubbly and patient teaching style. We will have fun learning a song that everyone knows and loves!

My lesson videos include myself speaking, the sheet music with the measures we're working on highlighted in real time, and a top-down view of my hands on my keyboard that is aligned with a digital keyboard that lights up and names the keys I touch in real time. All of this provides a ton of information for the student and is particularly great for visual learners.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to play "The Star Spangled Banner" on the piano from beginning to end with both hands.
Students will have be able to perform crossovers in the right hand, a common piano technique.

Students will have a look at the music with me to determine its Time Signature, Key, and other notable qualities.

Then we will learn the A Section, which is the first and second stanza of the song, Right Hand and Left Hand separately.

We'll learn how to do crossovers, (a common piano technique,) and students will be introduced to the dotted quarter-eighth rhythm.

Lesson 2:
The Star Spangled Banner: A Section Hands Together
For Lesson 2, Students will put what their knowledge from Lesson 1 to the test by learning to play the A section of the Star Spangled Banner Hands Together.
6 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
The Star Spangled Banner: B Section
In Lesson 3, students will learn the B section (third stanza or "prechorus") of The Star Spangled Banner. Once they learn this section, they have almost got the whole song!

We will learn each hand separately, and then work to get the hands playing together.

Students will then be encouraged to practice both the A and B sections Hands Together on their own to get it all smoothed-out.
11 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
The Star Spangled Banner: C Section
In Lesson 4, learners will embark on the C Section, which is the 4th and final stanza (or "chorus") of the Star Spangled Banner.

The final stanza is the most challenging part, with more extensive use of crossovers and shifting in the Right Hand. Again, we will learn each hand separately and slowly, and then put the hands together.

Students will be encouraged to practice this section on their own some more until they feel comfortable with it. And now they know all 3 parts of the song!
