Learn to Play the Recorder With ASL Fingerspelling!
Class experience
Wouldn't it be great to learn music and a few ASL fingerspelled letters at the same time? In this course, we will learn how to play the Baroque soprano recorder (see materials for more information about recorder types) and learn the first seven letters of the fingerspelled alphabet pertaining to the letters of the music scale. Instruction will incorporate the ASL alphabet with learning the notes on the recorder. This will give diverse learners the ability to follow along according to their...
Students will learn to read treble clef notes pertaining to the recorder and learn the ASL handshapes for each of those letters.
I have been teaching Beginner's ASL for three years to 6-12 year olds at a homeschool coop. I learned how to play the soprano recorder from a seasoned music teacher at that very same coop in third grade and have since continued to develop in my playing ability. I've seen firsthand how introduction to music through the recorder transfers to learning other instruments such as the piano, guitar, and other aspects of music.
A soprano recorder (preferably the Baroque version). While I will be using a Baroque recorder, concessions can be made for learners with the German version, as I can teach both. Note, however, that the majority of the instruction will mirror the Baroque method. The differences, however, are relatively small. Some tips to determine whether you have a Baroque or German recorder: - The baroque may have the letter "B" written above the lone back thumb hole whereas the German has a "G." - On the baroque, the 4th hole may be smaller than the 5th, while the German's 5th hole is smaller than the fourth.
