Students will learn: -to recognize the keys on the piano and their names. -finger numbers and how they relate to the position on the piano. -melodic contour -learning songs by rote and by reading -learn the value of practice and extension at home -basic rhythms and how to play and clap them -proper piano position and posture Students will meet weekly for a 30 minute class as a group. Following the class students will receive a practice and theory assignment to do at their own pace between the classes along with regular practice. This is posted after each class in the classroom. All students will require a keyboard or piano to practice at home. Regular weekly practice will be required in order to improve as with any instrument instruction. Week 1: Introduction to playing and posture Week 2: Learning the black keys and patterns on the piano Week 3: Quarter notes Week 4: Half Note Week 5: Music Alphabet and learning C-D-E keys Week 6: Learning F-G-A-B keys Week 7: Learning the C scale and Dotted Half Notes Week 8: Bass Clef and Treble Clef introduction, learning to read the treble clef Week 9: Learning to read the bass clef Week 10: Learning C-D-E-F-G in the treble clef Week 11: Learning C-B-A-G-F in the bass clef Week 12: Skips on the staff Week 13: Bass Clef C-D-E-F-G Week 14: Learning the Tie Week 15: The quarter rest

Each student will be required to have our piano method to work from. This may be purchased from your local music store or online. Faber Piano Method- Primer edition lesson book and theory workbook. -Keyboard or piano to practice and play together from home -Pencil available at each class

The teacher, Michelle Wheeler, will be using the principles in the Royal Conservatory of Music piano teacher certification program to help students begin their piano learning with proper technique and knowledge to continue into the RCM exam program if they so choose. Michelle is a certified Elementary Piano Specialist through the Royal Conservatory of Music, holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Masters in Music.
