This is a basic step by step how to instructional class on how to paint a portrait of Merriam the Mermaid, using acrylic craft paint! Students will learn how to set up their "studio", mix paints, apply paints to canvas board, draw a mermaid, wash their brushes, use basic art vocabulary words, follow instructions all while engaging in a fun group class with an instructor with years of both art and teaching experience! No student will be left behind as the instructor will help guide each student to success and the step by step process allows all students to walk away with a successful mermaid portrait! No prior experience is needed, just a positive attitude! As we paint, students will be able to ask questions, share progress with one another, and converse. At times while we wait for paint to dry I try to use that time to teach the next step or talk about mixing paint or cleaning our brushes, I also like to engage students in learning about them! * Please see attached file for full image of painting :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am Ms. Rachel, I have been working in education for almost 20 years! I have a BA in Art and an MA in special education. In undergrad I majored in graphic design and got my minor in technical theater and design. After college I became an Americorps Vista where I served for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee in arts Administration. I then taught for them full time for kids ages 5-18! It was those experiences working with students who came from low income families that showed me I really wanted to help kids who needed nontraditional ways to learn. So I went back to school and got my license to teach elementary school as well as my Masters degree in special education! I believe that all children have the right to learn on their own terms and that just like everyone's personality is different so is the way they learn! I like to help a student solve that puzzle for themselves. I also believe that art and hands on learning can be a highly engaging way for all students to learn! Here on Outschool I will mostly be offering different forms of arts and crafts classes, however I am open to tutoring for elementary and middle school students as well as plan on offering some fun and engaging writing classes to inspire and make writing for kids fun again! When I am not teaching I love spending time with my cats and my step son and his dad! I love to spend time outside, walking, running, or just hanging out! I also create for myself; I consider myself a painter as well as a fiber artist! I love to travel and have spent a good amount of time in Asia. Travel is inspiring! And if I am not creating something to hang on the walls I love to create baked goods too! I hope we are able to spend some time together so I can see some of your creations too!
