Class Experience
This 5-week class is perfect for learners interested in making their own oboe reeds. In order to get the most out of this class, students should have at least 1 year of experience playing the oboe. They should also have a reed making kit, and feel comfortable using the tools in the kit, including a reed knife. Each week we'll work on a new step in the reed making process. Depending on the learner, they should have a playable reed by the end of the class. Information in class will be presented...
This class is taught in English.
Students will learn the basics of making their own oboe reeds. Depending on the student, they may have a working reed by the end of class.
Students should practice each step between lessons. I encourage students to tie at least 3 reeds during the tying week, so they have enough reeds to get through through the class.
To get the most out of the class, learners should have a basic reed making kit, plus several pieces of shaped cane, and several staples. An example of a kit containing all the necessary supplies can be found here: https://www.mmimports.com/product/mmi-oboe-reed-making-kit/
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Learners will be handling sharp reed knives during the duration of this class. Parents may wish to be present and supervise while their learner is working with their reed making tools. This class also uses Nearpod for a first week activity.
