55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class, we will learn how to make a paper decoration you can hang in your own house. These are a lot of fun to make and can be hung in your bedroom or even used for birthdays or holidays! (I usually make these out of wrapping paper, because it makes them shiny and colorful, but any kind of paper should work.) ___________________________________ Class structure: In this class, we will learn how to make a decorative star out of construction paper that can be used in your own home, as party decorations, or given away as gifts. To do this, we will be folding, cutting, stapling/gluing, and connecting multiple, small pieces together to make one bigger piece. We will also discuss how to make these stars out of other materials, such as wrapping paper, which is much more time consuming, but also gives very pretty results. If there is time left near the end of class, anyone who wants to can show off their work to everyone. (If they want to show off their star, but don't want to be on the big screen, they can step to the side and hold their work in front of the camera.) ___________________________________ My Teaching Style: Demonstration and communication are my favorite tools to use in class. Knitting is a very hands-on skill, and I feel this class would work well for homeschoolers and unschoolers, as well as any student who just learns better kinetically. I generally try to keep students unmuted, except in the case of noisy backgrounds, and all students are welcome to ask questions at any time. I do ask that they use the "raise hand" button, rather than calling out, but if there are only one or two students in the class, they're welcome to speak up as they wish. I also have a second camera, which will be pointed at my work surface, to give students a clear view of what I'm doing. But if they'd like to see it from another angle, by all means, just ask! ___________________________________ Class expectations: As is Outschool policy, I do not allow bullying or teasing. Everyone is welcome in my classroom and learning is always something to be encouraged. I do not ask students to remain on camera for more than the initial class check-in required by Outschool policy, but being able to see will help me help them with the trickier parts of this project. If your learner has any unique needs to be accomodated, please let me know! I'm happy to help and want this class to be as fun and imaginative as possible for every student. ___________________________________ Required Experience: Students should be able to use scissors, glue, tape, and staples safely or have an adult nearby to assist them. (Please remember that Outschool policy does not permit parents to be on camera during class.)
Learning Goals
Students will improve their fine motor skills by cutting, gluing, taping, and/or stapling paper in intricate-looking patterns. They will also have a chance to improve their social skills by interacting with other students as they create a cute decoration together.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will be using scissors, glue, tape, and/or staples. Younger students and students with difficulties that could make these a danger to them should have an adult closeby for assistance. (Please remember that Outschool policy does not allow parents to be on camera during class.)
Supply List
• Construction paper (You will need at least 3 sheets in your chosen colors.) • A pair of scissors • A stapler (Tape works, but staples work better and the tape can be very fiddly to work with for this project.) • [Optional] Tape
