Class Experience

US Grade 4
In this class, students will practice important reading and writing skills while having fun and being creative! Each week will focus on a different aspect of Language Arts: reading, writing, grammar, or the arts (such as studying poetry or reading plays). Students will learn how to write different kinds of paragraphs as well as stories, poems, and letters. At times we will also review parts of speech, proofread and learn about correct grammar, and have discussions about the plays and stories we read in class. Each subject will be presented in a clear way and will involve activities and practice to help students enjoy what they are learning. These classes are very interactive, with time for students to ask and answer questions, give examples, and share ideas. Our classes often include a writing time for students to practice what they have learned, as well as a sharing time for them to share what they have written if they would like!

This class is designed for students who would like some extra practice and review in their Language Arts skills, but any student is welcome! It is an ongoing class, so students can jump in and out of the class at any time. I can't wait to meet your students and help them learn to love Language Arts!

I keep my classes going all year and continue to update the schedule with dates and class topics. Please see my available sections for current class times and check out the schedule below for our upcoming topics.

I also have a version of this class that covers the same topics, but meets twice/week:

- GAMES WEEK -
On the week of or before a holiday I often have “game week” during class. We play games like "guess the word," fill out a kids' Mad Lib together, read a play, etc. These activities are fun, but at times still give students some reading, writing, parts of speech, or spelling practice. Please note that although game weeks are often held alongside holidays, they do not have a holiday "theme." These classes include games and activities that all students can participate in, at any time of year!

- ONGOING CLASSES -

Supply List
Students will need a way to write. They are welcome to bring a notebook and pencil or type in the chat - whatever they or their parents are most comfortable with. If they write in a notebook, they may want to to have a separate notebook for this class to keep all of their writing projects together. It is at times helpful if the students know how to use the "annotate" feature of Zoom as I sometimes invite them to write on the screen, but it is not required.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! My name is Elaina Kane and I am from the United States. I have experience teaching online and in a public school as well as private violin lessons and small group theatre classes. I love to teach and I love to learn new things!

I have a Bachelor's Degree in theatre, and I have always been interested in music and teaching as well! I was an English as a Second Language paraprofessional for 3 years at a public elementary school and started teaching online in 2019.

When I was a paraprofessional, I worked with small groups of students in kindergarten - 4th grade. We learned about reading, writing, grammar, and poetry. We also sometimes turned stories into short plays that we performed! During this time, I also tutored many students one-on-one in math, reading, and writing, and helped (and later lead) the 6th grade drama class. My goal is always to help students enjoy what they are studying, even if at first it doesn't seem like a "fun" topic! I believe there is always a way to make learning engaging and enjoyable for students!

I have been teaching online since June 2019. I have taught lessons in ESL, reading, Language Arts, and theatre, and have worked with both children and adults. I love connecting with different students from around the world!

I so enjoy teaching English, but also love teaching theatre, both in person and online. I have directed or assistant directed student plays at a public school, private school, and for homeschoolers. One project was directing a children's version of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" for a group of homeschoolers. We had five actors and lots of props and costumes - and we performed on Zoom for an audience of family and friends watching from home! :)

Besides teaching, I love singing, reading, playing ukulele and violin, and being outside. My husband and I enjoy rock climbing, board games, taking trips, and reading together.

I am so thankful for all of my teaching experiences, whether they are online or in person, or whether I am teaching theatre or language arts. I strive to making learning fun and engaging for students so they can enjoy what they are learning and put it into practice!
