Learn-to-Fly: Instrument Navigation Basics
Class experience
US Grade 6 - 9
In this highly-interactive course, we will get to know the fundamental radio-navigation aid, the VOR (Very high frequency Omnidirectional Range!). We will learn several basic instrument navigation procedures, and then practice applying them in an online flight simulator (no download needed). Emphasis will be on building a mental picture of the aircraft's position based on cockpit instrument displays--the bedrock skill of instrument flying. We will then discuss instrument approach...
What is a VOR and how does it work? What aircraft instruments are used for VOR navigation? How do I determine my position using a VOR? How do I proceed direct to a VOR? How do I intercept an inbound VOR course? How do I intercept an outbound VOR course? What are the parts of an instrument approach? What are the key terms associated with instrument approaches? How do I fly a VOR approach? What are localizer and ILS approaches? What is DME? What is a TACAN? What is a GPS approach?
