Welcome to “Learn to Draw with Mr. Paul,” a self-paced video art class designed for the imaginative and curious minds of elementary students! Over the course of five weeks, students will embark on a creative journey through five engaging video lessons, each unlocking new skills and techniques in the art of drawing. Week 1Lesson 11. Let’s Draw Video Game LandscapesLearn about drawing video game landscapes with Mr. Paul! This 9 minute video will introduce the basic principles of perspective drawing in a kid-friendly way. Viewers will learn art words like foreground, middleground, background, vanishing point, and horizon line. We will make a simple drawing in one-point perspective, and then create our own video game landscape using everything we've learned! During this video, we will also look at works by Vincent VanGogh, Salvador Dali, M.C. Escher, and GeoWeek 2Lesson 22. Let’s Draw Selfie PortraitsLearn about drawing self-portraits with Mr. Paul! This 10 minute video will introduce the basic principles of drawing a human face in a kid-friendly way. Viewers will learn art words like self-portrait, symmetrical, and line of symmetry. We will practice drawing guidelines for the eyes, nose, and mouth in different positions. Then we will draw our own self-portrait. Viewers will learn how to do a graphite transfer so they can make multiple copies of the same drawing and color them in different sWeek 3Lesson 33. Let’s Draw Comic StripsLearn about drawing comic strips with Mr. Paul! This 10 minute video will introduce the basic principles of drawing a human face in a kid-friendly way. Viewers will learn comic art words like panel, beginning, middle, end, and punchline. We will start by designing our character(s) and thinking about their personality traits. Then we will develop our stories, sketch out our comic strip panels in pencil, and then add color! During this video, we will also look at works by Maxfield Parrish, Faith RWeek 4Lesson 44. Let’s Go On An Outdoor Art AdventureGo on an outdoor art adventure with Mr. Paul! This 8 minute video will introduce the basic principles of sketching from nature in a kid-friendly way. We will learn about using our sketchbooks to quickly capture the interesting things we see in the world around us. Mr. Paul demonstrates how to break things down into simple shapes so that you can draw anything - even if it looks complicated at first! During this video, we will also look at works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Paul Cezanne, Frida Kahlo, EdwWeek 5Lesson 55. Let’s Learn About ValueLearn about value with Mr. Paul! This 11 minute video will introduce the basic principles of shading in a kid-friendly way. Viewers will learn art words like value, value scale, light source, and shadow. We will start by making a value scale. Then we will do a practice drawing of a sphere, choose a light source, and then shade it in using all the values from the value scale. Students will learn fundamentals of drawing, including perspective, portraiture, visual storytelling, drawing from nature, and realistic shading techniques.
I have a BFA in Illustration from Columbus College of Art and Design, and have been working as a professional artists for twenty years. I've created illustrated cover art for over 400 novels and my paintings and have been shown in galleries around the world. I have taught extensively during that time, working with students of all ages in group and one-on-one settings, covering a range of subjects including drawing, painting, digital design, and more.
