Learners will learn the basics of linguistics, language history dating to pre-Viking times, and why many words in Nordic languages and English share the same origin. I will use a variety of instructional materials- slides, external sites, and other resources to engage learners. Content will be shared once a week with 45-50 minute videos and discussion questions/sentence starters for students to be thinking about the content and responding to other participants. New videos will be available...
Students will acquire an introduction to language history of the Nordic languages that may be a springboard for future study of Nordic languages or study abroad in the Nordic countries. Students who have an interest in why we have so many commonalities in Germanic languages will enjoy this class.
I studied Nordic languages and literature at the Artic University in Tromsø, Norway. I have had a great interest in languages and linguistics ever since I was in middle school. I have taught on Outschool since May 2020, both Norwegian, French, German, and several writing and life skills classes. I have taught and led in K-12 schools since 2000.
There may be 20-30 minutes of homework after some sessions. Participants will upload their answers and receive timely feedback from the teacher. They will also have the deadline of completing their homework by 7 pm MST Sunday.
Students will be informally assessed by the teacher on assignments, and sometimes complete an online exercise (such as a Kahoot!) to test their knowledge.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
We'll use the site Ny i Norge for some background information- an account isn't required.
