What's included

8 live meetings
8 in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. I will give homework for each lesson (twice a week) so that students practice each new skill that we learn in Ableton Live. Individual practice and experimentation within the software are of the utmost importance to get over the steep learning curve of this software. Projects will be completed individually in this introductory course but in subsequent courses, I will offer the ability for learners to collaborate with their peers. Homework should take no longer than 2 hours per week but extra work is always encouraged.
Assessment
Each learner will be asked to complete a final assignment consisting of one original song (minimum 3:30 seconds) which will be assessed by myself with a written report analysing production techniques, sound design, and mixing techniques employed. I will mostly offer constructive ideas on how to make their productions better in the future once they finish the course!

Class Experience

Recent technological advances in music production software allow anyone to make music! Even with little or no previous musical experience. Some of today's top musicians such as Billie Eilish, Skrillex, Flying Lotus, Daft Punk, and countless others started as "bedroom producers" with little more than just software.

I will be giving a short introduction course in the rudiments and basics of producing music utilizing one of the most popular music production software: Ableton Live. Ableton Live 11 Studio is quite expensive but luckily for us, it offers a FREE TRIAL of three months so you and your family can decide where music production is something you want to continue pursuing after my course and then you can invest in the full version of the software after this course has finished and you already know the basics of how to produce your original music.

Topics that will be covered in my 2-week introductory course:
Basics of music theory (rhythm, harmony, melody)
Basic functions of Ableton Live Studio so that you can use the endless tools in the software to create your music
An informal introduction to music history beginning in the early 1920s until now (blues, rock, pop, hip-hop, dance)
How to create interesting original songs from start to finish

I will teach this course using Zoom and sharing my screen so that learners can follow along on their computers and produce music alongside their peers and myself.

I hope to foster an interesting conversation that extends beyond just music production and that each student can share what their musical interests are and what they want to create. That way I can individually cater my lessons toward the specific needs of each student. I hope to have a class-based around the technical aspects of Ableton Live but that also includes a lot of sharing of projects between students.

After this course each student should feel confident exploring, playing, and creating on Ableton Live!

Our projected course schedule is listed below. This course plan is subject to change depending on the class's previous experience with music production and the class's general progression over time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello,

My name is Santiago and I am a music and video production professional.

I love teaching music production using Ableton Live (a prominent music production software). I also teach aspects of the business side of the music industry.

I teach video editing and production aspects including, video editing, film production and cinematography. I teach video editing on Davinci Resolve and free, industry standard editing software.

Professional Musician/Music Industry Background:
I have been creating music professionally for 7 years and I have played guitar and other instruments for over 15 years. I studied music industry and music production at USC in Los Angeles. I have worked in various record labels and publishing companies including: Friends of Friends Records, BMG Publishing, and Rhino Records (Warner Music Group). For the past 5 years I have dedicated myself to the creative aspects of the industry. I am now a sound designer, music producer, and I score films. I work primarily with large scale installation artists such as Julius von Bismark and Julian Charriere but my clients are varied!

Video Production Professional Experience:
I have been editing video from the age of 10 and though I did not recieve a college degree in video production I have become a professional via working in Julian Charriere's video editing studio. Julian is a prominent video and installation artist. Here I learned professional video editing techniques and also how to produce professional videos. I am now the in-house film producer for the non-profit, SOS Orinoco.

As a teacher I believe in creating an open-minded classroom where all students feel comfortable sharing their interests and the work that they create. I like to get to know my students and treat them as individuals and even give individual homework tasks to each student so that they can progress in their goals effectively!

I believe that teaching is a position of incredible responsibility not only because of the impact I can have on my students but also because I know from experience that good teachers can change lives! I am lucky to say that I have had many great teachers that have shaped the person I have become and have shaped my perception of the world and my ability to have direct positive change within the world.
