This course is designed for kids who desire to sew their own clothing. This course is a beginner garment construction course and is best suited for kids who are familiar with: - Threading a sewing machine - Winding the bobbin - Sewing straight lines If your child isn’t familiar with the techniques above you can register them for my 3-part beginner basics classes starting with class 1 called Learn The Art of Sewing, then Learn The Art of Sewing 2, and finally Learn The Art of Sewing 3. After these classes they’ll be comfortable enough to move forward with this garment construction class. The 8-week syllabus is as follows: Week 1 Day 1: Students will learn about fabric yardage, grainline, cross-grain, and the bias. They will learn about interfacings, muslin, toiles, and how to cut fabric correctly. Day 2: Students will learn about stitches and terminology and will practice staystitching, topstitching, and understitching using a seam allowance. Week 2 Day 1: Students will learn about various seams and will practice sewing the single and double-stitch seams, and french seams. Day 2: Students will practice finishing a seam bias tape. Week 3 Day 1: Students will learn about closures and zipper anatomy. Day 2: Students will practice inserting a center zipper. Week 4 Day 1: Students will learn about facings and sewing curves. Day 2: Students will practice sewing facings and clipping curves. Week 5 Day 1 Students will learn about pattern types, how to take measurements and how to read a pattern. Day 2 Students will learn about pattern markings and will practice transferring them to their fabric. Week 6 Day 1: Students will look at the pattern Simplicity #8179, and they will cut out their pattern size. Day 2: Students will take their pre-cut pattern, and use it to cut their fabric and transfer all markings. Week 7 Day 1: Students will begin garment construction on the pajama pant pattern they cut out. Day 2: Students will complete construction on their garment. Week 8 Day 1: Students will sew an infinity scarf with a hidden zippered pocket. Note* Students will need to pre-cut fabric before class so that we can maximize our class time, and depending on their sewing speed they may not complete the entire project in class but will have a replay of the class available to them to watch and complete their project. Day 2: Students will sew their pajama pant pattern again and make pajama shorts. Note* Students will need to pre-cut their pattern out of fabric and transfer all markings before class so that we can maximize our class time and get the shorts sewn as much as possible in class. Depending on the students' sewing speed they may not complete the entire project in class but will have a replay of the class available to them to watch and complete their project.
