Class Experience

This class will last 13 weeks, meeting twice a week, and will cover all of the 26 letters of the English Alphabet. The learners will create an alphabet book over the course of the class, completing 2-3 pages per week (each vowel will have 2 pages). I will teach the most common sounds for each consonant and the long and short sound of each vowel. The book will be in the form of a printable document that will contain each letter in a traceable font, with space for gluing pictures of things from nature that start with that sound. There will be an additional document with labeled pictures of all of the nature words that we cover in class, you or your child can cut out the pictures and then your child can glue them on their letter page during class. You will be encouraged to add other pictures or drawings of nature words or names of people that begin with the letter sound as well. ***NOTE: If there are no open sections of this class. I have a FLEX version of this class as well**

The lessons will follow a predictable pattern.
-We will sing an alphabet song.
-We will talk about a letter and practice forming the letter in the air, and by tracing the letter on the screen or on their letter page.
-We will talk about and practice making the letter sound.
-I will introduce two nature words that begin with the letter. We will practice saying these words emphasizing the sound. Your child can then use a glue stick to glue the pictures of the two nature words we discuss onto the letter page.
-I will teach a few facts about the nature words (for example: acorn). Sometimes we will sing a song, say a poem, or read a short story or book that includes the nature words.
-We will review previously taught material through games and movement.

This class will be great for kids who are just beginning their alphabet learning as well as those who just need more practice. It will be a fun way to grow in their knowledge of letters, letter sounds, and some fun nature topics as well.

Supply List
I will provide 2 printable documents that you can print off in order to create an alphabet book with your learner. This is not required for the class, but creating the pages will be part of what we do in each class. If you want to make the book you will need a printer, paper, and some way to keep the papers together (i.e. staples, three ring binder, folder with brads, etc.). If you choose to print the pages off at full size 8.5x11 one option is to insert them in plastic sheet protectors after your learner has completed the page. This will help protect the page when your learner reads their alphabet book. I have a video about creating the book posted in the classroom.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Wendy McCart.I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of North Texas. I have been teaching in a variety of settings including public and private school classrooms for over 20 years. I entered the world of online teaching almost a year ago, and have really enjoyed it. I would love the opportunity to teach your child here on Outschool.
I teach science and social studies themed classes with language arts and math content imbedded throughout. My classes are targeted at students from 3-10 years old. Some of the topics that I particularly love are: insects, animals, nature, geography, and world cultures. My classes provide students with a chance to learn and interact with me, and their classmates.
I am a homeschool graduate myself, and feel so privileged to be able to homeschool my two elementary aged boys. One of my boys is a budding naturalist and the other loves anything to do with technology, coding, and robots. Consequently, we spend a lot of time reading non-fiction books. I love incorporating non-fiction texts into my classes. Our family also lived in Europe for two years, and that experience along with other travel experiences I have had, are things I like to share with learners as well.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope to meet your learner in class soon!
