In this one-time, one-on-one class, the student will participate in an activity designed not only to help them learn their 8’s and 9’s times tables but also to further the larger mathematical goals of developing their number sense and strengthening their mental math skills. Strong number sense is the most important asset a young mathematician can possess and a gift that keeps on giving. Strong number sense leads to better overall conceptual understanding of math concepts, better mental math skills, and more proficient computational skills. During the session we will color the multiples of 8 and 9 on a hundred chart that I will provide in a pdf, make a T-table listing those multiples, and then search for patterns in the multiples. In addition, I will pose questions and engage the student in a discussion designed to stimulate their thinking about numbers. This approach to learning our times tables is visual, conceptual, and loaded with opportunities to make observations. Because this method goes far deeper than using flash cards or other rote techniques, it is far more likely to lead to the student's long-term retention of their multiplication facts. As we complete this activity, I will also share useful tips and suggestions and encourage a positive view of math.
