In this class we will explore the history, language and geography of Thailand. We will learn key Thai phrases that everyone who visits should know. Then we will explore the four main regions, important land markers, culture and unique food. Students do not have to use prior knowledge of the culture or language to attend this class. I am fluent in Thai and will be introducing words and sentences as we go along the lesson, having the students practice the words as a class and with a partner.
The learning goal is for the student to become more familiar with the Thai culture, history and language and to be able to use the new learned phrases appropriately.
From 2003-2005 I was a full-time missionary in Thailand. I became fluent in the Thai language, taught and served the people in the community and fell in love with the amazing people there. Upon returning from Thailand I was in the Thai club at Brigham Young University-Hawaii and worked at the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington D.C. as an intern and as an assistant to the First Secretary of Thailand there. I spoke Thai during the duration of my work. I was in charge of helping with their Education Department, working towards trade agreements and whatever was needed. I have spoken to many youth groups of my experiences and things I learned there as well as taught a course similar to this on Thailand to our homeschool co-op of fifteen fourteen- to sixteen-year-old students.
No homework is required for this class but it is encouraged for students to continue to practice the phrases they learned in this class at home.
Please have a paper and pencil or pen ready to write notes, copy down the Thai words and phrases being taught to practice.
I will make a formative assessment of the student by checking their participation in the class through practicing the language taught, asking questions and making comments.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
No scary or upsetting content will be shown.
None will be used but a power point I will make with information for the students.
