Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
Welcome to my Watercolor Sight Words Class!

In this class we will work writing the most common sight words (High Frequency Words - words we know by memory) for 1st and 2nd grade. With just a few needed materials, we will have so much fun painting, reading and writing these sight words!

Here is what you can expect in this 30-minute sight word class.

*Introduction & welcome - We will make sure everyone is greeted. I may ask a few get to know you questions to build a classroom community. We will make sure everyone has their materials, instructions and is ready to go!
*Number our paper - We will fold our paper into sections to be able to write ten words.
*Begin writing - I will show the students a flash card with the sight word. I will model how to write the sight word neatly. The learners will write their sight word next to the correct number with a white crayon. We may also talk about some phonics strategies to help us remember some of these sight words.
*Time to paint! - After all of the sight words are written, we will get out our watercolors, small cup of water and get painting! We
will go over some strategies to make sure our watercolors are getting just enough water and we will paint over the white crayon to reveal the sight word! If we have extra time at the end of class, we will write these sight words in sentences or play a game.
*Show off & clean up - When we are finished, we will take turns showing our work to one another. We will make sure our work space is all cleaned up and our paints are closed.

*The sight words used in this class will be a variety of 1st and 2nd grade sight words. We will be using a combination of grade level words, FRY Words and DOLCH sight words to guide our instruction. They do not build upon one another; therefore, you can join in any time! I hope to see your learner in class with me!

I am a certified elementary teacher and have taught phonics, reading, writing and math for many years. Before teaching 2nd grade, I tutored students in reading comprehension, decoding words, math and science after school and during the summer. I was also a Title 1 reading intervention specialist for grades kindergarten-3rd grade focusing on reading fluency and comprehension strategies.
