Beginner Level
Each class begins with a captivating short video featuring two Native Spanish speakers from Mexico. They discuss the topic of the week while speaking slowly and clearly to ensure learners comprehend every word. Learning organically through conversations helps learners develop a natural understanding of the language. After watching the video in the first class of the week, we dive into a trivia-style game. Learners guess the meaning of key lines from the conversation, encouraging active...
The learning goals for students in this course are centered around developing the ability to speak Spanish organically. Rather than solely memorizing words without understanding how to use them in sentences, the focus is on facilitating authentic conversations. By immersing students in meaningful language contexts, we aim to equip them with the skills necessary to confidently engage in real-life conversations in Spanish.
With my bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, as well as my experience as a language learner and instructor, I bring a unique expertise to my Spanish classes. Having started learning Spanish in high school and continuing my studies at the university level, I have built a solid foundation in reading fluency and spoken proficiency. Over the past 20+ years, I have immersed myself in the Spanish language and culture. My ability to read and speak Spanish without an English accent is a testament to my dedication and commitment to mastering the language. What sets me apart as a Spanish teacher is my personal experience as a non-native Spanish speaker. I understand the challenges and complexities that English speakers face when learning Spanish. This relatability allows me to effectively explain concepts in a way that makes sense to English-speaking learners. Drawing from my own language learning journey, I can provide valuable insights and strategies to help students overcome obstacles and achieve their language goals. For the past three years, I have been teaching Spanish classes virtually, and I have witnessed tremendous growth in my students' language abilities. Many of my students began with little to no knowledge of Spanish and, by the end of the school year, have gained the confidence to read in Spanish and engage in basic conversations.
Homework Offered
Homework assignments in this course will support students' language learning process by providing additional exposure, comprehension practice, and opportunities for continued practice. After each class, students will have the option to re-watch the video from the lesson, allowing them to reinforce their understanding of the content and further develop their listening skills. In addition, students will be encouraged to practice the vocabulary words introduced during the class. This involves reviewing the vocabulary list, playing the trivia, and optionally participating in the activities that were played during class. These activities serve as an engaging way to reinforce the language skills learned in class. Interactive activities help to solidify their understanding of the material. The purpose of homework is to provide students with ongoing opportunities for practice and reinforcement outside of the class sessions. By actively engaging with the content through homework assignments, students can further develop their language proficiency and confidently apply their skills in real-world situations.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
