Learn Phonics A-Z with a Family Friendly Letter Challenge 5 days per week

Class Experience
Students will learn to recognize and write the letters Aa-Zz, while gaining a strong understanding of the most common sounds letters make, in this fun and engaging 5 week flexible schedule class. Each week students will enter the classroom at their convenience to watch a quick unlisted YouTube video of Teacher Catie talking about the letter and animal of the day, teaching the days zoo-phonics signal and sound, and doing a kinesthetic review of letters previously learned. Students will be encouraged to participate in a virtual Outschool classroom show and tell: upload a photo or video to the weekly Show and Tell thread of an item found at home that begins or ends with the sounds learned that week. Optional extension activities: -Letter of the day challenge activity -Letter/animal of the day coloring page -Handwriting worksheet -Uppercase/lowercase sorting worksheet. -Handwriting without a pencil: Teacher Catie will provide ideas and recipes for sensory writing activities (ex: cloud writing, salt tray) Students are encouraged to share pictures of themselves doing the extension activities or their completed work with Teacher Catie and the other learners in the Outschool classroom. The Challenge of the Day activities will be presented by Teacher Catie through a quick Youtube tutorial. Challenge activities will be related to art, science, sensory activities, and DIY games. Material lists will be provided in advance and will consist of typical household items or easily attainable, inexpensive materials. Many of these challenge activities are meant to be done as a family and will require parent participation. Some of challenge activities included are: A= Apple Seed Science Experiment B= Butterfly Craft C= Cloud in a Jar Science F= Firework Art G= Gooey Gunk I= Dissolving Color Igloos L= Fizzing Lemons M= Magic Milk S= Snow Dough Z= Zigzag Zoo-Phonics Crown I will be using the Zoo-Phonics whole brain approach to teaching phonics in this class. I am not affiliated with Zoo-phonics in any way. I was trained to use the Zoo-phonics method in 2003 and have been using it successfully to teach beginning reading skills since! Learning Goals
At the completion of this course students will have a strong understanding of uppercase and lowercase letters. Students will have 26 days of practice with letter recognition, writing and the most common phonetic sounds.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This is a parent involved class. Students will need parent help and supervision to complete letter of the day challenges and upload photographs to the classroom.
Supply List
Students will need access to various materials throughout the class. Materials needed will be basic household items and will be posted in the classroom in advance. Students will also have access to A-Z worksheets and 26 printable letter pages throughout the course that can be used to create a Zoo-Phonics alphabet book.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
