In this class, students will learn the Latin terms associated with the chariot races through a slide show presentation. As they learn these terms, I use questioning to get them to think of English words derived from them, while also providing examples that will build their English vocabulary. They will explore the role and history of the chariot races in Roman culture and the connections between them and our own culture through discussions regularly interspersed throughout the class period....
I am a certified educator and have been teaching Latin and classical culture in the classroom and online for almost 23 years. I hold two bachelor's degrees, one in English and one in Classical Studies, and a master's degree in Latin.
A three page handout describing the chariot races and Latin root words with English derivatives will be provided.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
In this class we will be using the Kahoot quiz site for fun, low stakes competition and reinforcement for the learning. No subscription is required to use this free service. Students will be participating via computer or smartphone to sign into the quiz game. I will also be screen sharing to present a Google Slides presentation and will make a handout on Google Docs available as well, though the handout will not be required for the course. None of these services require a subscription or an account.
