Class Experience

Are you interested in Korean culture? Do you want to understand what Korean people say? Are you planning a trip to Korea one day? This is the right place to start learning Korean! Let's begin the first step of the great journey. I am a qualified native Korean teacher, who is fluent both in Korean and English, lived in Korea for 28 years and just moved to the US 3 months ago! I received a perfect score from the Korean section of the Korean SAT. Furthermore, I have experience working in the college press and a thesis correction team of my university and experience teaching non-native speakers, native Korean students and native Korean teachers in Korean language for more than 7 years. I'm sure that I'm going to be a good teacher and a friend to start this journey.

We're going to work with slides I make. I'll explain how Korean characters are made, how those work, then we're going to study how to read, how to write, how to pronounce, and practice it together. We're going to see the images of Korea taken by the teacher and talk about Korean culture every class as well. After this class, the learners will be able to read, write and pronounce any Korean characters anywhere!

We're going to meet once a week for 5 weeks. I also offer a one week crash course, so please check it out if you're interested! This is class doesn't require any background knowledge to take. Feel free to join and let's have a fun week! The teacher will provide worksheets which students can practice writing with, and pronunciation files recorded by the native Korean teacher.

We're going to study the basic 24 characters for the first 3 classes, and advanced characters which are extension of the basic characters-5 double consonants, and 11 compound vowels(diphthongs)-in the next 2 classes. Here's the detailed plan for each class!

The first class : What is Hangul? We're going to study who made the Korean writing system Hangul and what is special with these characters. We're going to see the images of the characters and learn the philosophy in these characters for the first step of the great journey. We're going to see how they look and how they work, then we're going to learn 7 characters out of 24 basic Korean characters - consonants ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, and vowels ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ. We're going to pronounce and write those together, then combine those to make real sound we use in Korean and practice with examples.

The second class : We're going to learn 9 characters - consonants ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅇ, and vowels ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅛ, ㅠ. We're going to practice the pronunciation together with simple vocabulary I prepared during the class and we're going to learn how to write as well. We're going to write the learners' and the teacher's names in Korean together!

The third class : We're going to learn the rest of the basic Korean characters, total 8 - consonants ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅎ and vowels ㅡ, ㅣ. We're going to practice the pronunciation and writing with the all characters we learned so far. Congratulations, the first step to Korean is halfway done! There are a few more characters we need to study, but it doesn't take that long since they're extension of the basic characters.

The forth class : We're going to learn 5 double consonants and 4 compound vowels(diphthongs) - consonants ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ, and vowels ㅐ, ㅒ, ㅔ, ㅖ. We're going to practice the new characters and have a big review time!

The fifth class : The last class of this section. We're going to learn the rest 7 of the compound vowels(diphthongs) - ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅚ, ㅝ, ㅞ, ㅟ, ㅢ. We're going to talk a little bit about the rest a few characters which we're not going to talk about in this class, since those are not used often on the beginner lever of Korean and require more understanding in Korean. Let's talk about those in following classes! Let's try to read the vocabulary the teacher brought for the class in the previous classes, which the learners can read the whole part now. Let's also see why our names are written like that in Korean! On this level, the learners can read any Korean anywhere. Congratulations! You just made the first step of the great journey. See you in the following classes!
