Learn Japanese Through Culture VI: Eating Out in Japan
Class experience
As a language is so heavily informed by that country's culture, the goal of this class is to provide cultural context that is both interesting and helpful to students developing a better understanding of Japanese. Being able to read/write Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji characters is not required but an understanding of at least a basic level of Japanese grammar and/or vocabulary is recommended in order to get the most out of this class. As the theme of this 8-week course is eating culture in Japan,...
Upon completing this class, students will have: - Learned more about food and eating culture in Japan, the differences between types of cuisine, what restaurants/cafes are like, etc. - Learned vocabulary related to Japanese food and dining, and its meaning. - Practiced listening and speaking of Japanese in situational conversations (ordering from a menu, asking questions about allergies, asking/giving suggestions/recommendations, etc.). - Practiced describing food/drink items in Japanese, presenting their menu of their designed restaurant or cafe in Japanese.
I have studied Japanese for more than 12 years and am fluent in the language. I also am experienced in tutoring middle school, high school, as well as college students in Japanese and I have lived accumulatively in Japan for about 5 years. In terms of knowledge about eating culture in Japan, aside from what I have l learned simply from living in the country itself, regularly going to restaurants and cafes, etc. I have worked as a tour guide for a food tours company in Japan. I have also had the experience of cooking all manner of authentic Japanese dishes for which I have taken numerous cooking classes both in and outside of Japan, including Japanese pastries and traditional sweets, for which I earned a teacher's license in cake and pastry making while living in Japan.
All audiovisual material for class (sound/video/image) will be provided as part of PowerPoint presentations (or similar) displayed for students through use of screen share on Zoom. Students may want to have a notebook and pen/pencil to take notes in class. All "follow-up worksheets" and class supporting materials (i.e. vocabulary lists) will be provided to students by the teacher in the Classroom. For their final project, students will be asked to design their menu to show to the class as they present their restaurant/cafe. This can be drawn, made digitally on the computer using pictures found on the internet, etc. however the supplies needed to complete the design part of this final project will vary accordingly.
