Description
Class Experience
In this 4 session course, students will deepen their understanding of Japanese language and culture through exposure to Ghibli Studio G-rated films. Complete beginners/upper beginners or those mainly interested in culture are all welcome in this course. Each week, students will watch the featured film before class. As they view they can keep the “discussion topic” listed below in mind. During class, we will review the main events of the story and discover how the discussion topic relates...
I have been speaking and learning Japanese for 17 years. I have an N2 level JLPT Japanese certification for 2008 and 2014 (second highest level in the current testing and previous testing systems). I lived in Japan for 10 years and completed an Asian Studies degree with a Japanese language and literature focus and an minor in Linguistics. In addition, I am TESOL certified and a very experience ESL teacher so I am familiar with how to instruct my learners carefully, respectfully and effectively.
Students need only to watch the movies before class. No external resources will be used.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
**Please have your learner watch the weekly film BEFORE class each week** You should be able to find all of these films on Netflix. Because class may depict some images released by Ghibli Studio in class, a recording of the video will NOT be available after class to avoid infringing on copyrights. For this reason, if your learner must miss a class, please inform me a minimum of 24 hours before the session as they will be unable to view the lesson afterwards. Because at least half of each class will be dedicated to discussion, a minimum of 3 students are required for each section.
