Class Experience

his class is designed for the kid that wants to learn how to make an easy hard taco recipe with a side of black beans. I will be using ground turkey, but you are free to use ground beef or a meat substitute if that is what your learner desires and/or requires.

The goal of this class is to prepare a delicious dish for everyone to enjoy. I suggest, but not require, that your learner take the Kitchen Basics course that I offer prior to taking any cooking class. Learning these skills before entering the kitchen could aid in preventing accidents and foodborne illness in the kitchen; as well as aid in getting your learner more familiar with maneuvering through the kitchen.

How will the classes in this course be taught?
This class is a mixture of hands-on, lecture and discussion.

How will this course flow?
At the beginning of class, we will do a quick run-down of kitchen safety and sanitation. Students should read the class attachments prior to every single to class in order to be fully prepared for the class. Once the safety and/sanitation quick reminder lesson is over, I will dismiss the learners to the kitchen to wash their hands.

To make the class run smoother, please have the learner read the recipe and grab all of the equipment/utensils needed prior to the start of class.

I will model and demonstrate each step of the recipe first and then I will have the students repeat after me to make sure they are following directions carefully.

I ask that you let your learner doing mostly everything with minimal assistance, but I request that you supervise your learner while in class to as a safety precaution.

What will the learner walk away with after taking this course?
Upon completion of this course, the learner will have a good understanding of how to make an easy dish using a recipe. The learner will also feel more confident in their cooking/culinary skills.

How should the learner prepare for this course?
The learner should make sure all ingredients in the recipe are purchased prior to the start of class.
The learner should also wash, clean, rinse, and air-dry (for sanitation) all countertops, surfaces, equipment, and utensils that will be used in preparing the recipe BEFORE CLASS. Everything should be set out and ready to go at the start of class time.
The learner should also arrive to class on time so that they won't miss out on any important information or directions that will be given at the start of the class; and so that the learner can begin cooking at the same time as everyone else.

Additionally, the learner should come prepared to talk, engage, and participate with the teacher and other learners. This is not a lecture only class so students should be comfortable being called on and participating/talking. Engaging students in conversation is how I will assess their understanding of the material.

Will the dish be completed prior to the end of class?
Having completed dishes is always the ultimate goal, but sometimes depending on learner ability and/or other circumstances, dishes may not be completed prior to the end of class. Short recipes are chosen so that learners can complete and taste their items prior to the end of class, but in the event that dishes are not finished in time, the teacher requests that the learner posts a picture in the classroom or sends a message to let everyone else know how their meal came out.

Note: There must be a minimum of two students enrolled in class at least 24 hours prior to the class or this class will be canceled.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I currently teach high school in the state of North Carolina. I teach Food and Nutrition and Career Management to students in grades 9-12. I am your resident life skills lady. I am certified to teach all Family & Consumer Science courses to include Food & Nutrition, Intro to Culinary Arts, Principles of Family & Human Services, and Interior Design. I am also a certified ServSafe Food Manager and certified ServSafe Instructor/Proctor. This certification is granted by the National Restaurant Association.

Additionally, if it has anything to do with life skills, then you can find me somewhere hanging around in the shadows. I also have a 10 year background in homeownership counseling and financial literacy education. I am all about the numbers and making sure they add up. Better money management equals a better life. My motto is, "If it doesn't make dollars, then it doesn't make 'sense'."

I believe that one of the main components of being a successful teacher is knowing and understanding that every single student has their own needs and requirements when it comes to learning. There should never be a “one-size fits all” approach when it comes to providing instruction because it just will not work. This is why I love teaching so much. I love teaching because it gives me the opportunity to help others grow in whatever manner they specifically need and that is where my passion truly lies.
