Beginner Level
In this fun and interactive course, students will learn about drawing and shading using pencil. As this is a flexible schedule class there are no live meetings but I provide an abundance of resources and support to help learners develop at their own pace. I am available and happy to answer your questions any time during the 6 weeks of class. I am a qualified art teacher with over 14 years experience and I love to help students develop their abilities! All my drawing exercises are tried and tested and have helped thousands of children and adults to improve their drawing skills. No experience is necessary and this class is very suitable for beginner artists as well as those looking to improve their skills. Over six weeks, through specially recorded video demonstrations, I will teach learners how to draw an outline and then gradually add the details and shading. Also covered are proportion and perspective with tips and tricks to help throughout this course and (afterwards!). The course is structured so that the easier drawings are first, so you will see learners' confidence in their drawing ability grow as they complete each lesson. There will be one lesson each week with a choice of two drawings (published in the classroom on Thursdays) with a wide range of subject matter - covering the most popular drawings from the live version of this course. Learners can choose which drawing to do or do both if they want to. Most subjects will include some "freestyle" options, where learners are free to finish their drawing in whichever way they like, for example adding a background or personalisation. In this way they can use their imaginations to make their drawings unique to them. By the end of the course, they'll have increased their drawing confidence and have artwork to be proud of! Each learner will be expected to post pictures of their drawing progress on the classroom and to leave positive feedback on each other's work, building a sense of community and support. These interactive elements make the biggest impact on students' enjoyment of the lessons. It is important to me to promote interaction through the Outschool Classroom (we can think of it as our 'gallery"!) so I will also be posting questions designed to get learners sharing ideas regularly! Learners will need a supply of paper, a pencil (ideally 2b and 4b pencils), an eraser, pencil sharpener and some q-tips/cotton buds for blending. Occasionally they will need a ruler too.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basics of creating shading and texture, using simple shapes to begin their drawings and also how to understand proportions.

Hi, I am a qualified art teacher originally from Ireland and now living in the UK. I am also a practising artist and have exhibited my paintings across the UK and Ireland. When I'm not teaching on Outschool, I also deliver art workshops for the University of Arts, London. In addition to 13 years experience teaching Art and Design to children aged from 4 to 17, I have also taught courses in life skills such as resilience and growth mindset, both online and in the classroom.
I am really passionate about helping children to develop or rediscover their creativity and maintain their confidence in art! So often children and young people lose their confidence in art and this can happen for a variety of reasons. I work with them to build their skills and change their mindset so that they can find joy in the process again.
My classes on Outschool teach key art concepts in fun and engaging ways. Different classes cover topics such as tone, colour and composition. My most popular classes are 'Everything You Need to Know About Drawing' and multi-day 'Build Art Skills and Confidence in Drawing' where I work with children who are very unconfident and benefit from a carefully designed plan, tailored to their needs. I am so pleased to have helped so many students like this rediscover their joy in making art. I really love it!
