Learn Chinese Characters and World History Through Chinoiserie Arts & Crafts!

We will learn about the Chinoiserie design style, a few auspicious Chinese characters and some world history lessons through the spice trade between east and west. Learners will create their own Chinoiserie arts and crafts project.

Class Experience

Learners will be introduced to spice trade between east and west, Chinoiserie design style and 4 auspicious Chinese characters. Learners will also have a chance to create their own ginger jar inspired ornament balls, rocks or placement cards. 

Topics range from world history, geography, Chinese and Chinoiserie design style. 

We'll begin by learning about the history of spice trade between East and West. The trade will lead us to the vessels used for transporting spices-ginger jars. We'll also look at some examples of motifs and Chinese characters used in the spice trade. Finally, we can see through these influences from the far east Chinoiserie design style was then formed in Europe. We'll have a hands-on arts and Crafts session where we'll get inspired by what we learned and create our own decorative piece using this important design style- Chinoiserie. 

Learners will interact with me throughout this class and for the arts & crafts session they may wish to interact with each other to exchange ideas. 

Learners do not need any prior experience or knowledge to join this class. Just come and have fun learning!

Learning Goals

Learners will learn about the spice trade which gave birth to Chinoiserie design style in Europe. They will be able to identify a ginger jar and know its usage. They will learn four stylized auspicious Chinese characters and be able use at least one on their arts and crafts project.
