Once learners understand this structure and the form and function of its organelles, topics like photosynthesis, mitosis, inheritance, and everything else in the standard life science curriculum will make sense. This one-time class will teach learners the basics of cell biology through drawing – an evidence-based teaching method shown to improve memory of complex concepts due to its emphasis on visualization, kinesthetics from the hand drawing the image, and semantics as meaning-making is created through discussions occurring when each organelle is drawn. I’m taking this approach for the class to encourage understanding rather than rote memorization of cell biology facts that learners will need to thoroughly understand and recall as they move on to higher science classes. In grade school, I was highly active in science fair contests and often advanced from local and state to regional competitions each year. This passion for explaining the natural world and human body led me to begin teaching in 2002 while in college. By 2006, my core subjects were middle and high school science and writing. I taught these subjects in the classroom and as an afterschool tutor for underprivileged children. In my own studies, I had a 3.9 science GPA in college and excelled in anatomy, cell biology, histology, and pathology in medical school. Reviews
