This class is a great way to get started with American Sign Language. Students don't need any prior knowledge to be successful. Our young learners will experience Sign Language through games, activities, and children's literature. Students will be unmuted for the majority of the lessons, so they can easily ask questions. We may mute, at times, if necessary, so that everyone can hear the sign descriptions. Students will learn best if they try and copy the signs I am doing, but they are not required to talk, making this a great class even for the shyest little learner. Class 1: Students will learn some of the basics of American Sign Language, as well as the signs for at least 10 animal signs. We will work together as a group to identify unique characteristics of different animals and practice these signs. Students will also take what they learn about how signs are developed to try and guess unknown animal signs. Class 2: We will review the animals students learned in lesson 1. Next, they will learn at least 10 colors. We will have a scavenger hunt where students find objects around their houses that match the given color sign. They will also identify the color of objects I show, by using the appropriate color sign. We will work on combining what was learned in the first two lessons to prepare for the culminating activity in lesson 3. Class 3: Students will put the knowledge they learned in the first two classes together with a few new signs to sign the popular children's book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?" by Bill Martin Jr (Macmillan Publishers).

Hello, I am Ms. Tammie. I am very excited to have the opportunity to teach your child! I believe that getting kids excited to learn is the most important step in teaching. I offer a variety of high interest classes and utilize entertaining props and strategies to help engage children. I offer academic classes such as sign language, math strategies, and early reading skills, as well as, fun hobbies such as juggling, clay, and scavenger hunt adventures.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University. I am also in the process of becoming a certified sign language interpreter. I taught in a public school for 15 years as a classroom teacher and a math interventionist. My teaching experiences range from Kindergarten to fifth grade. I have a passion for making sense of math with kids in a fun and engaging way. I have started and run my own Sign Language Club in an elementary school, as well as interpreted at local events.
When I'm not teaching I love playing outside! This includes running, riding my bike, hiking, and ninja training with my three children. I'm always looking for the next adventure to embark on.
I would love the opportunity to put my experience and expertise to use in the classroom teaching your child something he/she is passionate about exploring further, or struggling with and in need of support. Please feel free to message me with any questions or class requests. I hope to work with your child in my classroom soon! Thank you!
