Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this flexible learning course we will explore the Rainforest! Each week we will have a pre-recorded video lesson, followed by discussion in the OutSchool classroom and interactive learner assignments

Each week learners will be given an assignment to complete and share with the rest of the class in the form of videos, web-quests, digital tasks, escape rooms, written work and fun quizzes.

We will start the first week with a lesson on the rainforest itself, learning about them in general and move onto learning about the animals, the weather and plant life.

Although this type of class does not meet live on Zoom there is a lot of interaction between the learners and myself with the children being encouraged to be part of our class.

The following is a break-down of the course and the subjects we will be learning

Week 1: This week we will learn about the Rainforests in general. The lesson focuses on the types of animals which live in each layer, the plants that survive there and the climate. After the lesson the learners will be expected to draw and label the layers of the rainforest using either the printable worksheet or a digital version. They will then be expected to share their completed sheets in the classroom and comment on other's work also.

Week 2: This week we will learn about the locations of the tropical rainforests. The lesson focuses on the where the rainforests are in the world and explains why they are all near the equator. After the lesson, the learners will be invited to take part in a fun activity, where they can use google maps to locate the Rainforests. The learners will be expected to mark out the rainforests in relation to others in their class.

Week 3: This week we will learn about the weather and climate in the tropical rainforests. The lesson focuses on the learning the facts about the rainforest weather and making comparisons with local area weather conditions. After the lesson there will be an activity for the children to make comparisons about the weather in their own country, their classmates’ countries and the rainforest.

Week 4: This week we will learn about the plants of the Rainforest. The lesson focuses on learning the facts about tropical rainforest trees, rainforest flowers and jungle plants as well as recognising them. After the lesson the children will be drawing and sharing their pictures of the types of plants in the rainforest, with support from the class the children will then identify each other’s plants.

Week 5: This week we will learn about the animals in the Rainforest. The lesson focuses on learning the facts about some of the strange rainforest animals and recognising them. After the lesson the learners will be expected to complete a web quest to research their own information and contribute this information to the class fact page, which will be made up of information gathered from the children enrolled

Week 6: In our final week we will look at the adaptions that plants and animals make to survive in the rainforest. The lesson focuses on learning why animals and plants have certain attributes which help them survive in the rainforest. After the lesson children will taking part in a digital, online escape game to use the knowledge they have learnt in the course. They will solve clues and support each other to solve the puzzles.
