Intermediate - Advanced Level
This course will help learners establish a foundation for understanding how the horse's body systems are structured, how they function and how this is important to the care of these amazing animals. During a once-weekly live discussion with PowerPoint slides, we will cover a body system/organs. We will relate that back to practical application in caring for our horses. Learners will be asked to watch additional videos after class and to comment on a discussion question each week. This will allow further understanding and engagement with the group. Optional projects and quick quizzes are available for those who would like to participate. Finally each student will be asked to create an equine biology project based on a horse lifestyle/life stage that will be assigned or approved by the teacher. This project will be based on the biological and practical needs of the chosen horse lifestyle/life stage and can be done using any medium the learner chooses. This includes a short story, a series of drawings, a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation or other medium approved in advance. Students will share their project in class. They will not be receiving a grade on this project. There us no rubric. This is for fun and for deeper exploration as the learner begins their study of practical equine anatomy and physiology.
Learning Goals
Learners will begin to develop an understanding of equine anatomy and physiology.Learners will use the knowledge they now have about the body systems and use their critical thinking skills to relate that back to the practical ways we care for equines to keep them happy and healthy.

Introduction, Terminology and Integumentary System
This lesson will begin with the introduction of the definitions of anatomy and physiology. Medical directional terminology will be shared. The Integumentary system will begin the study of equine anatomy. Unit assignments will be given. 45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Skeletal and Muscular Systems
This lesson will start with defining conformation and soundness. The skeletal system and bones, ligaments, hooves and types of muscles will be discussed. Unit assignments will be given. 45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Digestive System
The digestive system including the teeth will be discussed and how equine digest food. Unit assignments will be given. 45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Respiratory System
The respiratory system and some common respiratory issues will be shared. Unit assignments will be given. 45 mins online live lesson
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some videos may contain ailments of the horse as it relates to the body system being discussed. If a student is sensitive to a horse being sick and does not want to watch the video, they are not required to.
Supply List
Supplies for class include a notebook and pen/pencil. Additional supplies may be needed for course project based on the medium chosen.

I am a certified veterinary technician and have bred, raised, trained and shown horses for many years. I have a M.Ed. from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
I have been teaching at local community colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I also teach at a private university in an equine studies program.
Along with that, I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4 cats!
I am absolutely passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and Equine and veterinary sciences with others and look forward to helping your learner explore the possibilities!
