US Grade 4 - 6
Learn About Mathematics in Nature The complex world of mathematic is all around us in the natural world. This fun class is run over four weeks, learners will have fun and learn about different aspects of natural mathematics. Each week will consist of a video lesson which the children can watch to learn about the particular aspect of natural mathematics we will be working on, they will then use the knowledge they have gained to complete fun tasks which demonstrate their learning. They will use the OutSchool classroom to discuss the tasks and support each other in solving the tasks. The children will need to work through the objectives given to them and prove they have learnt the information, with this fun lesson. While this class does not meet live, the children will still be expected to participate by completing the set task, commenting on discussions in the classroom and demonstrating understanding. Week 1: This week we will learn about mathematical shapes in nature, the children will learn different naturally occurring shapes and investigate how and when these occur. They will then be expected to create a photography or drawing project to compare natural shapes Week 2: This week we will learn about the Fibonacci sequence. What it is, why it is so important and how it occurs in nature. This week students will be expected to create a project, which demonstrates the interconnectivity of the sequence. Week 3: This week we will learn about fractals in nature. The students will learn what fractals are, how fractals are present in nature and ways to spot them. The students will then complete a study of a local area to find fractals that are in that area, they will share their findings with the class. Week 4: In the final week we will learn about the roles of circles in nature and their relationship with mathematical equations. This week we will also be going back over previous learning in a class participation survey with answers feeding back into the class discussion
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of advanced mathematical concepts in a fun and easy to understand way.
