What is Purim? Who is Vashti? Who is Esther? And what does the evil Haman have planned for the Jewish people of Persia? Taught by a teacher with an MA in Jewish Studies, this class introduces students to the noise-making, costume wearing, get silly holiday of Purim! Students will hear the story of Queen Esther, and how she bravely saved the Jewish people from the villain Haman. We'll discuss the traditional foods of Purim (think cookies!) Students will learn what a Megillah is, why...
•. Students will learn about the origins of Purim • Students will hear and understand the Purim story • Students will learn about the Purim traditions children celebrate in the United States, and around the world • Students will have a chance to casually interact with peers around a shared learning goal • Students will practice using their listening skills and (time permitting) their speaking skills
I have an MA in Jewish Studies from the University of Indiana-Bloomington, and completed several other academic Jewish Studies and Religious Studies classes, at the graduate level. I was also raised Jewish, and I taught Hebrew/religious school for several years. Outschool is a secular platform, and this class takes an academic and secular approach to all topics.
Please bring paper, and crayons or markers to class!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The Purim story contains violent and/or possibly scary elements, including mentions of death, hanging, etc. I do not focus on these aspects, but they are integral to the story and may also come up in class conversation. This is a secular and inclusive class about Jewish holidays and cultural traditions. All students are welcome. No prior knowledge is required.
